The brass
BrassUnit was born out of a shared passion for music when its members met during a weekend course in Vänersborg. Their first collaboration took shape as a graduation concert in the autumn of 2020 – the starting point of an ensemble project that has since grown in both artistic depth and visibility.
The quintet’s members, with roots in southern and western Sweden as well as southern Germany, have studied at music academies in Hamburg, Karlsruhe, Berlin, Hannover, Lisbon, Gothenburg, Stockholm, and Malmö. In addition, they are active as freelance musicians in Sweden, Denmark, and Germany, where they are regularly engaged in professional contexts. In a short time, BrassUnit has established itself as one of the most exciting brass quintets in Europe. They perform at chamber music societies, festivals, and concert halls across Europe, while also cultivating a strong artistic identity by commissioning and premiering newly written works for brass quintet – often in close collaboration with young composers.
The ensemble has already received several prestigious awards. In the autumn of 2023, they won first prize in the brass quintet category at Nordic Wind Festival in Oslo. In 2025, they were also named winners of Ung & Lovande, the Swedish Chamber Music Association’s national competition for outstanding young ensembles – a recognition of their strong position in the Swedish music scene. The prize includes an extensive tour throughout Sweden, comprising approximately 30 concerts.
