BrassUnit was born from a shared passion for music and ensemble playing. Their initial collaboration took the form of a graduation concert project in the autumn of 2020, marking the beginning of an ensemble that has since evolved both musically and artistically. Today, the quintet consists of musicians from Sweden and Germany, with educational backgrounds in cities such as Hamburg, Karlsruhe, Berlin, Hanover, Lisbon, Gothenburg, Stockholm, and Malmö.

In a short time, BrassUnit has established itself as one of Europe’s most forward-looking and promising brass quintets. They perform regularly at chamber music series and festivals across Europe while cultivating a strong artistic profile by commissioning and premiering new works for brass quintet—often in close collaboration with young Nordic composers. To make these works accessible, they founded BrassUnit Publishing, a publishing house dedicated todisseminating new music and arrangements. BrassUnit constantly seeks new challenges and ways to strengthen the brass quintet’s position on the chamber music scene and further its own artistic development. This has resulted in, among other things, performances featuring Professor Håkan Hardenberger as a soloist, as well as collaborations with Professor Reinhold Friedrich and other professors across Europe.

Engaging and inspiring the next generation of musicians is also a key part of BrassUnit’s work; the ensemble conducts workshops and seminars focusing on ensemble playing, artistic expression, and a career in music. As the "Ensemble in Residence" for the Polstjärnepriset (Polar Star Prize), the group regularly teaches within the framework of the talent program in Vänersborg.

The ensemble has already received several prestigious awards; in the autumn of 2023, they won first prize in the brass quintet category at the Nordic Wind Festival in Oslo. In 2025, they were also named winners of “Ung & Lovande” — the Swedish Chamber Music Association’s national competition for outstanding young ensembles — a recognition of their strong standing on the Swedish music scene. BrassUnit has also achieved success in other international competitions, such as the Ljubljana International Competition and the Philip Jones International Brass Ensemble Competition.
